Abstract: MgO with high specific surface area was prepared using a new gel-templating route, in which a gel mixture was formed by heating rice powder in Mg(CH3COO)2?H2O solution followed by calcination in oxygen to remove the template. It contains more strong basic sites and less acidic sites and exhibits higher basic catalytic performance compared to MgO from thermal decomposition of the precursor.
