Abstract: Direct conversion of cellulose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) catalyzed by CrCl3•6H2O in ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([bmim]Cl) was described with the promotion of microwave. The effects of microwave irradiation setting, reaction temperature, reaction time, and catalyst amount on HMF yield were investigated. The results showed that cellulose was converted into HMF rapidly and efficiently in [bmim]Cl with the HMF yield of 55%.
